Please join us in this thread on Wednesday January 27th from 12:00-1:30pm for a Q&A about adaptations and adjustments.
Our expert in the field, Demelza Stuart, who serves as our Advocacy and Information Officer and Occupational Therapist in Northern Ireland will be hosting the Q&A and will use your questions, thoughts and input when updating our current Adaptations Manual.
We would love to hear from anyone who has used the manual in the past, or from anyone who has thoughts to share and questions to ask about the adaptations process.
We look forward to the discussion.

Is there a toilet seat riser that can elevate a person up to standing height [whilst feet are on the floor and not tipping the person forward] that can work in a wet room?

Demelza Stuart, our Occupational Therapist is currently in the process of updating our Adaptations Manual. We would like to know if any of you have used the adaptations manual in the past? If so, can you tell us what was helpful about having the manual? Was it easy to understand?
We would also like you to give recommendations for what information would be useful to have in any future publication to help you through the adaptations process?
Please feel free to share your thoughts and experiences on adaptations here.

January 27, 2016 at 12:03 pm #121009Reply To: Adaptations Q&A 27.1.2016 12:00-1:30pmHi everyone. Welcome to the discussion.
The aim of today’s Q&A is to get your feedback on our Adaptations Manual. This publication aims to provide advice to both health professionals and individuals going through the adaptations process.
So, has anyone used the adaptations manual in the past?Muscular Dystrophy UK staff member
January 27, 2016 at 12:07 pm #121010Reply To: Adaptations Q&A 27.1.2016 12:00-1:30pmHi taungfox. Yes you can ask questions here, and discuss your experiences of going through an adaptations process to your home. As Emilie said above, we may not be able to answer individual queries during the Q&A, but we will be happy to hear your question.

January 27, 2016 at 12:07 pm #121011Reply To: Adaptations Q&A 27.1.2016 12:00-1:30pmI am rather confused by the fact that Zero Rating of Adaptations
is not very well publicised.I did not know about it till the O.T. lady mentioned it in connection
with the special “purpose built mobility scooter store” that I was having
made for my mobility scooter.Strangely the company building it did not know anything about it and were most
suspicious. It took the intervention of one of our MD ladies to
advise than and come up with the relevant paperwork. As this was a specific adaptation for a durability issue there should have been no doubt at all!

January 27, 2016 at 12:12 pm #121012Reply To: Adaptations Q&A 27.1.2016 12:00-1:30pmI was given the adaptations manual at a regional conference in
2010. It was even on a CD.Question. Has it been added to or changed since 2010?
It had lots of very useful advice.
Loved the templates to calculate “door swings” and “turning circles”
when panning adaptations to your home. They were basic overlays though.
Has anymore work been done on this?"Even if you are not paranoid, it does not mean they are not out to get you!".
January 27, 2016 at 12:13 pm #121013Reply To: Adaptations Q&A 27.1.2016 12:00-1:30pmThanks for raising this. If you’re disabled, you should not be charged VAT on products designed or adapted for your own personal or domestic use. Also, you should not be charged VAT on:
• the installation and any extra work needed as part of this
• repairs or maintenance
• spare parts or accessories
The product and your disability have to qualify.

January 27, 2016 at 12:16 pm #121014Reply To: Adaptations Q&A 27.1.2016 12:00-1:30pmThe adaptations manual is currently in the process of being updated. The new version should be available by summer time. Good to know the templates were useful. Did you like the fact the manual was available as a CD? Would it also be helpful to have all the content available to download from MDUK website?

January 27, 2016 at 12:19 pm #121015Reply To: Adaptations Q&A 27.1.2016 12:00-1:30pmI for one would like it to be downloadable.
I have also noticed that awareness of VAT exemption has dwindled across the board.

January 27, 2016 at 12:27 pm #121017Reply To: Adaptations Q&A 27.1.2016 12:00-1:30pmOne reason is that my new laptop hasn’t got a disc drive! It would also mean that those with tablets or who primarily use their mobiles to find information would be able to access the manual.

January 27, 2016 at 12:28 pm #121018Reply To: Adaptations Q&A 27.1.2016 12:00-1:30pmGreat. We are hoping to have an online version of the manual, which will be much easier to keep up to date.
Does anyone have any feedback on the content of the manual?
Is anything missing? We will certainly include details of VAT exemption and how to claim this in the new version.
