    Weird Symptom

The last year I have had a weird symptom that I am wondering if anyone else has had.

This regards my stomch and diet. After all 35 years of my adult life being 30-31 inches around the waist it has suddenly increased to 37 inches. But I have not gained weight I have lost weight (just 3 pounds). My appetite has just vanished and I
cannot eat normal meals. I thought I had an allergy or intolerance and had booked an appointment with my GP to ask for advice on this. No the dietician at the hospital says this must be neuromuscular. “There are lots of muscles in the stomach” she adds. I was only ingesting 800 calories a day. Now with her help I am up to 1200-1400 but still no weight gain or waistline change. Cannot see the logic.
    Has anyone had similar problems?

That is curious. I personally have not had such happening, my abdomen has ‘shifted’ because of the extreme curvature of my spine, plus I wear an elasticated brace which holds things in.

“Take Care” made the point, a lot of our conditions are rare, unique and different. What is so obvious is that even the best specialists do not completely understand them.

I too am experiencing “weird” stomach symptoms.

I cant much at meal times at lunch I am lucky if i manage about half a sandwich. I no longer like to eat out as my stomach swells during meals making me very breathless and tired. I now have to put my ventilator on and have a lie done after my dinner.

My tummys gone from flat to tubby.

I too have noticed my portion size has decreased yet my waist has spread. Some of my skirts are getting a bit tight :o

Eating makes me uncomfortable and I arrange eating around my day which isn’t ideal as not eating makes me flag earlier. It is a vicious circle although like catatude I use the ventilator after meals to combat the breathlessness. I have also noticed my heart rate increases after I have had a meal.

In the past I have tried various things to put on weight e.g. build-up drinks, full fat milk, fortifying mix, cheese sauce on veg etc. Anything to increase calories but it didn’t make much difference and it got me to the point where I couldn’t even look at a build-up carton!

A new speech and language therapist has come up with some theories on this. She explained in grea detail the complex series of muscles and sphincters that stop food going own our airways. She says there are similar ones at the start and end of our stomach and if they are slightly “out of synch” (myontonia wil obviously do this) food stays a lot longer in the stomach which stays bloated and you do not feel hungry. also rsults in food becoming overly and repeately digsted and everything finally comes out a liquidly mush. I too relting on fortifying with milk powder, honey etc and usually a final blast of complan to get an accepatable calorie total.

I have always had a healthy appetite and still do, also drink quite alot of beer and now that i am moving about so much less this is a situation that can’t go on! I know i should be eating and drinking beer alot less but then i think, “this is the only pleasure i have left” and put it off, i am only a 36/38″ waist but this might change soon enough if i don’t show some restraint.
I feel foolish posting this when so many of you guys are unable to manage to work up an appetite and i hope you will forgive me as i am not trying to rub it in. I hope that by writing this i can convince myself to show restraint and do the right thing. Best wishes to all my Talk MD pals. :)

I don’t as of yet having any symptoms that some of you describe. The problem I have is a total lack of interest in food at the moment due to gall stones, it doesn’t matter what I eat I still get severe pain at times. I’m waiting surgery to remove gall bladder (that should be fun! ;) ).

It never occured to me that MD could affect eating habits

    Good luck with that surgery.

Just had a bit of Deja Vu. My mother had exactly this problem. The gallstones and fainting like a goat were the only two symptoms she had that we assumed were not euromucular. Maybe the are related too.

Thanks your insight and good luck.

ok, new weird symptom. Spent last week in hospital for weird pain in my side.

It started very suddenly last Monday night and grumbled away till the morning till I decided to go to A&E.
It this really deep burning pain on my back under my right rib and I feel real sick. the docs run some test did some xrays and scans and didn’t find anything wrong.(couldn’t find my kidney either) they sent me home on last Thursday but the pains still going strong. Im going from being hot one minute to freezing the next and I feel really tired.

They tried to gently imply that it was just a sore back coming off my scoliosis but it feels different and I can normally manage a sore back with hot showers and pain killers. if anything the pain killers make it worse.

And do you know what one of the Doctors told me. “You cant have Muscular Dystrophy, only boys get Muscular Dystophy”
Makes you wounder how safe you are

Has any had pain like this and what may be the cause.

Sorry to hear about your hospital stay. It is true most medics associate MD as just Duchenne and thus fall into the wrong conclusion only appears in boys [even though there are very rare instances of girls with DM].

When I read your symptoms, I first wondered if it was anything kidney wise, but I assume the scans ruled out infection, grit or stones, same with the gall bladder.

I hope the pain subsides soon, it is annoying and uncomfortable when an area of our body decides to stretch, hurt or burn as my shoulders, arms and hips seem to want to do recently.

    Re: Weird Symptom

my first symptom last monday was being unable to pee. they eventually put a catheter in but no infection.

they did do a scan but couldn’t find left kidney dont think they looked for gall blader or stones.

I tried going to my GP but he wasn’t interested in finding the problem just wanted to give me a cert for work.

the docs think its just my scoliosis but it not typical for my back pain after my spinal surgey I lost a lot of feeling in my back, its mostly pain in my shoulders and neck from leaning or pulling myself up, and a killer pain right on my tail bone.

oh and while im having a good old moan, ive got 3 massive bruises from when the nurses transfered me from bed to bed and helping me sit up.. they didn’t want my mum to help me, but when helps she never bruises me or drops me.

    Re: Weird Symptom

If its gall stones the pain is awful. I get my pain in the early hours of the morning, it occurs all down my right side both at the back and front right side. It doesn’t matter what you do, sitting up, laying down, rocking etc nothing helps, I can only shift it by taking Co-Dydramol.

How are you now are you still in pain?

GP gave me solpadol and omeprazil and one of them seems to be making me really sleepy, possibly to strong for my body weight and the fact that i hardly eat this week or last.

pains a constant burny niggle this morning. seems to get worse after I eat.

ohh and my  wees went a bit strange its gone all stop start stop start with a weird pulling sensation, do you think this is someting to do with the catheter they put in last week or is this a kidney stone thing.

thanks guys for letting me have a moan. ;)

Gall bladder can hurt more after eating but I’ve never had toilet problems with it, so I’m guessing that could be the catheter. Best thing would be to go back to your GP if your still unwell, maybe see a differennt GP if your not ttotaly happy with your normal one

    my weird sympton cont…

when I was ill at the beggining of the month I had a iv drip in my hand during my not so lovely stay in hospital.

thing is my hand swelled up with the Iv and now I have a hard lump just beside the wee bone that sticks out on my wrist.

does this normally happen and will it go away. the bruising and puffyness has gone down put it hurts around about the lump when I write, zip up a coat or use the mouse.

How long was the IV in for? It could be bruising from the IV thats taking awhile to come out.

I have heard of people getting a localised infection from IV’s. Hopefully it is just the related bruising. Have you had many IV’s before and if so has it happened before?

My arms are terrible, when I have a blood test my arms bruises terribly and I look like a junkie gone mad, but I have absolutely no problem at all if the blood is taken from the back of my hand.

It can also depend on the efficiency and skill of the person who put the needle in.
