Supermarket Delivery – Major Problems!
Big warning.
With the government directive for so many people to stay at home there has been a completely massive surge in online food deliveries. This means people have been “panic buying” delivery slots.
Been up since six am trying to book a delivery with ASDA but the best I can get is a delivery
in 1st April.Usually you can book a delivery slot for the next day! Now it is two weeks and getting worse by the hour.

Reply To: Supermarket Delivery – Major Problems!My experience is with ASDA but can only assume all the supermarkets will be having the same issues.
Floods of able-bodied people are taking these slots and disabled and vulnerable people who are regular customers are just Not able to get their food delivered.
My housebound cousin normally books Friday for a Monday delivery. The best I can get her is 1st April so next week we will have to send the cleaning lady out to collect food.

Book a “recurring slot”, so that from now on that is booked for you from now onwards.
If there is a “Lockdown” this will be an issue that gets worse.
Please address this issue for yourself and please think if you have vulnerable friends or relatives who rely on food being delivered.

You cannot. Got held for 67 minutes yesterday without getting through.
Today as call volumes are obviously increasing you get a short polite message and are immediately cut off.

Reply To: Supermarket Delivery – Major Problems!I understand from recent news articles that this situation may be changing with various supermarket chains utting in preference measure for the elderly and disabled. Sadly, for me at least, they are opening early so we can go in without pressure from the able bodied.By the time I have got the body moving and dressed etc it is already getting towards mid morning.
I wonder also if it is worth contacting the Rotary Club and/or the Round Table who often have schemes to help in similar circumstances.Mike

Earliest ASDA delivery is now 4th April.
Prices as high as 6.50 and 7.50 for popular slots.
Went physically to Tesco. Not one single bread item. Bare shelf!
Luckily I have 3 loaves in freeze and will share with cousin.
Yes Mike they must being in preference for disabled and housebound
people but nothing from ASDA and on the phone they now cut you

Reply To: Supermarket Delivery – Major Problems!It is difficult times indeed. No one in social care sector seems to be checking on vulnerable people to ensure they are coping.
I’m fortunate my chemist delivers and for free. I have also seen on my towns facebook groups that local businesses like in winter are offering delivery service to primarily the vulnerable but extending to as many as they can. Many of the small businesses, shops and takeaways have been supplying little emergency packs of toilet roll and hand-wash. To minimize social gatherings our butchers is now delivering and two of the pubs who serve meals are doing cooked delivery.
Our small shops have never yet run out of supplies and many are same price or lower than supermarket. Might be an idea to check your towns facebook groups or call one of the small grocers to see if they can deliver.

Reply To: Supermarket Delivery – Major Problems!I went to all supermarkets in a ten mile radius today, and what scenes of total chaos I observed. Massive queues at the checkouts and so many completely empty shelves. I have given up any hope of obtaining even one 4 pack of toilet roll, I certainly won’t be entertaining those greedy buggers selling them on ebay. (A 72 pack of Andrex for £84.99 at the last check).
I at least have no worries about milk. I get my milk delivered by a milkman, in glass bottles! (It tastes so much better btw folks)
Tesco are supposedly giving their first hour of opening to elderly people, i’m not sure about disabled people. I don’t have a blue badge or disabled bus pass to present, and I can’t exactly prove I need the walking stick; not unless they kick the damned thing out from under me!
I was disgusted to see that my local Co-Op had been forced to close two hours early, just so they can get some stock on the shelves for goodness sake.
My pal works in an Asda store, and he told me collegues had been assaulted and spat on by the ravenous horde. This is absolutely disgusting, and worse even that Black Friday. He also said that they have plenty of stock, but not enough manpower to get it all on the shelves, before it is stripped bare by the locusts; sorry customers. (Locusts was my analogy btw)

For those on Facebook it might be worth joining community groups to find out who is doing what. I’m happy to help people find info if not a Facebook user. Reply To: Supermarket Delivery – Major Problems!Ranald, at time of writing, Tesco are providing the hour of 9-10am Monday/Wednesday/Friday for ‘elderly and vulnerable customers’. However, it’s entirely self-policed. That is to say, they’re hoping that the community will follow those rules themselves. Honestly, I think we might see more changes to opening hours (maybe 8-8 instead of 6-10) or something like that.

Reply To: Supermarket Delivery – Major Problems!Yeah, it’s really unfortunate. The elderly thing would be easy to police, but the vulnerable of course is tough. How do you prove that someone is vulnerable or not?
Reply To: Supermarket Delivery – Major Problems!I think it would be far more sensible to have a manned segregated area in store. where they normally have the seasonal area out the way and reserve that for essentials for the vulnerable. 1 or 2 dedicated shelving rows with access to fridge and freezers with a supply of fresh goods as well as household essentials.
By and large older people or disabled shop in small amounts that can be carried not great big trolleys.
Please be sure to check out your smaller local stores. My local ones are all fully stocked and people are being sensible on amounts. Its harder to be rude or over shop in a little store in walking distance to your home when the staff behind the till will know you.
Tips
Call around your small stores if you cant see on Facebook whats available.
Large suppliers in my area who normally supply the pubs are now doing home delivery packs of meat, dry goods etc.
