Since upgrading to Catalina on the Mac the dictation microphone keeps shutting off every 10 seconds or so. Anybody else had this problem? It is very annoying.

I have never had this problem myself. I guess you have checked Settings. Also worth checking the amount of free memory you may have, and perhaps, forgive me if you have tried this, different software package, say Text or similar.
Are you using the inbuilt microphone or using and external one, say with a headset. In which case a loose wire comes to mind.

Thank you Mike I use an external microphone [new]. Everything else you have suggested I have tried! Technology! :bang:

Just wondering if the microphone is wired or Bluetooth. If the latter restarting the Bluetooth module may help. In your Activity Monitor is it showing a good ‘overhead’ of spare memory?

Wired; I don’t like all this ‘is it connected is it not’! Until a solution comes up I will carry on I use the on-screen keyboard as well, I use them in conjunction. Always have. The microphone just reduces tiredness

Curious. Does the microphone plug into a USG or a microphone hole?

I have had similar problems with USB kit on my Mac. Turned out that there was insufficient power to the device. WOrth looking at a fully powered USB hub. Even the USB direct in the Mac may not have enough power to run your kit. Worth a try.

Sorry for the delay in my reply Mike. I have had trouble with the new site. Plus a little time in hospital. Thank you for your advice. However, this issue is stubborn. My friend, a tech guy is stumped too despite trying many ‘cures’ including yours. Resolution one day I am sure just patience needed! Thank you again. :bang: :ty:

I trust you are feeling better now. Just another thought. have you tried using the built in microphone, indeed using a different one altogether, as there may be an impedance mismatch there.

Tried the built in. As my voice is weak it doesn’t quite get my words, and jumbles them. Tried two other microphones no change. I have a powered USB hub, doesn’t help either. Maybe if I upgrade again it will rectify the problem that I didn’t have until I upgraded last time! I’m on Catalina at the moment.

Lol… Thank you for the good news! I am worried I must admit. I first started using Windows. Four years ago my wife bought me a Mac and everyone said that they are much better. I’ve never quite got used to it. I have even considered changing back I probably won’t but sometimes the thought comes into my mind.
